In the 1971 Formula 1 season, Lotus decided to continue to focus on the 72 model with appropriate modifications, including a different rear wing design on the 72C model and new suspension on the 72D model. In addition, Lotus attempted to introduce a specific version of the 56 model, which was raced in the United States, into F.1. This single-seater car, powered by a Pratt & Whitney turbine with four-wheel drive, was intensively tested by Fittipaldi at Snetterton, Silverstone and Hetheli, showing some improvements, but essentially remaining unsuccessful.
